Penticton is a city located in the southern part of British Columbia, between the Skaha and Okanagan lakes. It was first settled by the Syilx (Okanagan people), of the Salish language in 1865. Its name was coined from the Salish/Indian tribe and it means “a forever place”. Penticton was made a district municipality in 1908, and a city in 1948. In an attempt to develop the place, these first settlers engaged in activities such as transportation, recreation, education, trade, and agriculture, on which they survived.


In the Okanagan-Similkameen regional district, which is part of Okanagan, Penticton is the largest city by population and area, for which it’s the third largest in the region.



It has low precipitation with 346.0mm as the annual precipitation and high daytime temperatures. The mean relative humidity ranges from 63-77 percent in the morning and 36-69 in the afternoon. It has a very low amount of fog and a mild winter season. The average snowfall of Penticton per year is 58.7cm, and it is the fourth driest city in Canada.


Penticton has a school district called school district 67 Okanagan Skaha, with 10 elementary schools, 3 middle schools, and 3 high schools. The city also has some francophone schools, namely: Ecole entre-lacs primary school and the Ecole Secondaire de Penticton. The faith-based schools in Penticton include Penticton Christian school, Holy cross school, and Concordia Lutheran school. The post-secondary schools in Penticton are Sprott Shaw College, Okanagan College, and the Okanagan Hockey School. The Penticton Public Library was formerly a part of the Okanagan Regional Library but was separated in 1968.


The major type of sport played here is hockey, and the city has hosted several hockey games which various teams from around the world have been invited. Some other sports that have also been hosted by the city include the 2010 British Columbia Scotties Tournament of Hearts, the 2013 Continental Cup of Curling, the 2016 BC Winter Games, and a couple of others.

Moreover, Penticton hosts numerous events every year, and among them are the Penticton Peach Festival, the Okanagan Wine Festival, the Meadowlark Nature Festival, the Superleague Penticton Triathlon, and the Miss Penticton Pageant. Furthermore, Penticton is known for its wineries, with over 40 wineries in the city.

Does Penticton have any international relationship?

A sister relationship has existed between Penticton and Japan since 1977, making it one of the oldest relationships in Canada. It all started in 1975 when residents of Penticton went in a bid to look for business opportunities in Japan. They formed an alliance with the mayor of the town of Ikeda, Japan, who proposed a sister-city relationship with Penticton because of its similarities in winery production, geographic features, and cattle industry. This relationship has brought about an exchange of culture due to exchanged visits of residents to the respective locations annually. It also led to the building of a Japanese garden in Penticton, known as the Ikeda Japanese Garden in honor of their agreement.
